Using “Visual Representations”

I. Search options

The directory can be searched using special filters (year, keywords, person responsible for the work) as well as a full text search. The used plugin teachPress currently considers in its search results only names, words in the picture titles and abstracts .

II. Metadata

The metadata on the sources consist––if known––of person responsible for the work, title of the picture (see below), dating, technique, measure/weight and place of storage including inventory number.

The information usually comes from the documentation provided or researched. Since it was only possible for the editors to personally inspect the information and/or carry out further in-depth research in individual cases, incomplete data sets also exist.

The title of the picture is always composed of

  1. the name of Empress Anna von Tirol – see family tree
  2. the collection abbreviation – FHM-KK – see list of collection abbreviations used (item VII)
  3. a number 1 – see next paragraph
  4. a brief description Kniestück halb links, stehend, am Fenster mit Krone

The result is a structured output: Anna von Tirol – FHM-KK 1: Kniestück halb links, stehend, am Fenster mit Krone.

The offline material management during the project was done with the help of two programs for the metadata (Zotero) and for the image material (Pixave). The collection abbreviation and number (e.g. FHM-KK 1) served as a link between the two programs. In the course of data processing, occasional counting breaks occurred within a collection due to corrections and deletions.

As far as known, the title of the picture also refers to a counterpart with the portrait of the emperor.

In individual cases there were no illustrations available which could have served as a basis for the short description. In these cases the description was kept general.

III. Terminology

As already mentioned in the introduction to the online directory, this directory is not a highly complex IT solution and the use of plug-ins means that for technical reasons some terms had to be defined in summary form, which is not or will not be satisfactory in all respects for both editors and users. However, we hope for the further development of plug-ins in the active WordPress community.

  • Author: Collective term for artist, publisher, author, employee, etc. Here we follow the common spelling in the general Allgemeines Künstlerlexikon.
  • Kupferstich (Engraving): Generic term for a number of intaglio printing techniques such as etching, drypoint, mezzotint and aquatint etc.
  • Einzelblatt (Single sheet): generic term for single-sheet prints, portrait prints, broadsheets
  • Abstracts: contains the bibliographical details if the image source is part of a book.

III. Keywords

In order to reduce the amount of keywords to a feasible level, we have chosen the following five groups of keywords:

Group 1: Names of the empresses – in exceptional cases, multiple answers may be given if several empresses are shown in one picture. In this case all the following keywords always refer to the empress in the title of the picture.

Group 2: 5 types of pictures are distinguished:

  • Einzelportrait (Single Portrait)
  • Doppelportrait (Double portrait, usually the empress with the emperor)
  • Ereignisbild (image of an event)
  • Gruppenportrait (Group portrait)
  • indirect (the empress is not depicted)

Group 3: Collection codes (see point VII)

Group 4: The sources were grouped into 7 subject areas:

  • Prä-Kaiserin (Pre-empress, works depicting the empress before her elevation in rank, such as children’s pictures or, as in the case of Maria Anna of Spain and the four empresses of the 18th century: Spanish queen, Bavarian electoral princess, Roman queen)
  • Hochzeit (Wedding)
  • Krönung (Hungarian, Bohemian, Empress Coronation)
  • Geburten (Births)
  • Witwe (Widow)
  • Tod (Death)
  • Representation (misc.)

The latter category is a collection of all representative acts that are not directly related to the other subject areas. Each picture is always assigned to only one, the dominant subject area.

Group 5: The 4 media collected

  • Einzelblatt (single sheet): The classification of the engravings as single sheets is based on the existing tradition as independent sheets. To what extent the sheet may have originally served only or also as book illustration could only be determined in individual cases. These works are highlighted with the blue label Buch (book).
  • A Gemälde (painting) is everything that was created in a process of painting or drawing. Here, the materiality is of secondary importance.
  • The designation Medaille (medal) serves as a collective term for coin-like memorabilia without monetary character, as well as tokens. Furthermore, it also includes designs and imprints of medals.
  • Objects are things that have been hewn, blown, modelled or put together. They are mostly accidental finds in the course of research. A comprehensive systematic survey is still pending and, due to the poor level of documentation, requires more extensive cooperation with museum collections where these objects are primarily kept.

V. Digital versions

If available, links were mainly set to websites of online museum collections, databases and Wikipedia that offered permalinks. Only in exceptional cases were links made to image databases that did not offer permalinks, such as “Tiroler Portraits“.
