Contemporary Prints

The following directory contains printed works that were published between 1500 and 1740 and are related to empresses. Empress Maria Theresa was deliberately not included, because due to her position as hereditary daughter and ruler in her own right the media coverage to her person differs significantly from the one to her predecessors. Another research project (link) has recently dealt with its reflection and representation.

Included in the collection were all searchable texts dealing with the person of empresses and events in their lives. In addition, writings of the so called “Reichspublizistik” were included, which were entirely dedicated to the position of the Empress or devoted themselves to a significant extent to this position. It does not include librettos of musical dramatic or theatrical performances dedicated to birthdays or marriages of the Empress as well as not general celebratory descriptions and periodical chronicle-like publications such as the “Theatrum Europaeum“. As far as possible, until December 31, 2017 online available digital copies of the printed works were linked to facilitate direct access to the texts. The link with the information summarized in the Gateway Bayern from the VD 16, 17 and 18 or alternatively with the VD 17 should also facilitate the access in libraries and to additional information to the texts documented there.
